Lesson Summary: Introduction to Proverbs - January 20, 2002

By way of introduction to the book of Proverbs, Tom shared a technique for looking at scripture that he learned in some of his seminary classes.

This method involves looking at the content of the Bible as one of three things:

  1. God revealing Himself to us, typically through the medium of the prophet
(examples: prophet books, books of Moses)
  2. Our response to the revelation, through the medium of the Priest
    (examples: Psalms)
  3. Instruction of inspired men, through the medium of the sage
    (examples: Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Job)

Proverbs falls into this last classification: instruction, or "wisdom literature".

We then took a look at the first seven verses of the book of Proverbs, extracting the the preeminent purpose as to instruct in fair, just and right living.

Assignment for next week:
Read the first 9 chapters of Proverbs (view online) and make notes on anything that is striking to you. That could be connections, repetitions, or anything that jumps out at you. We will use the list as a basis for class discussion in the coming weeks.
