Lesson Summary: Proverbs Chapters 1-9 - February 3, 2002

What do verses 1:22-33 say about wisdom? Are there "summary" verses?

Verses 32-33 seem to summarize the passage best:
32: For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them. 33: but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.

Is it hard to find wisdom? What do you do?

You have to actively seek it.

What are the benefits to seeking wisdom, as outlined in the following passages?

A. 2:1-21 - knowing God (5) which leads to your salvation (12)
B. 3:13-20 - precious and profitable; wealth; long life (14-15)
C. 4:7-12 - exaltation and honor (8); will walk well and not stumble

As an aside: As you look at these things, remember that they are not promises, but expectations.

In contrast to Wisdom, what are the consequences of Folly, as outlined in the following passages?

A. 5:3-10 - lose all you have; your wealth will go to others
B. 6:24-29 - what you hear is only what you want to hear & not the truth
C. 9:18 - a life of folly ultimately leads to death

What are some of the paths people choose in 2002 that are akin to "taking fire into your lap" or having a "mistress"?

  • gambling; "get rich quick" schemes; playing with fire in the stock market
  • materialism and greed in general
