Two reference handouts:
Discussion of previous questions:
1. What is the definition of 'fear of the Lord'
The word fear evolved over time in the Old Testament
| Passage |
Word |
Meaning |
| Exodus 19:10 |
yarat |
terror |
| Exodus 20:20 |
yarat elohim |
respect/awe |
| |
pahd |
terror (new word exclusively for terror, and old
word, yarat, now means respect/awe) |
2. What did Old Testament Jews think about the after
life?
Life after death is not a major theme of the Old Testament
-- how to live a long and healthy life in the land seemed
to be the prevailing theme; however, life after death
is not entirely absent, either, and it is
a major theme of the New Testament. Old Testament references
include:
- 2 Samuel 12
- Psalm 23
- Psalm 49:14-15
3. Can you be saved if you haven't heard about God?
Romans 1 - General revelation concept. Where there
is no knowledge of Jesus, God saves through ways not
fully clear to us. One reason for emphasizing that Jesus
is the only way is to counteract the pluralism
we find today (ie, your way is OK for you and my way
is OK for me)
