Sunday, 1/30/2000 - Class Notes Third Figure of the Church, The Flock & Shepherd "The Flock" Diagram 1. What scriptures would you use to teach about hte figure/metaphor of the flock? Heb. 13:17 2. What characteristics of a good shepherd do you find in John 10:1-16? - knows sheep by name 3. What is the difference between a sheep fold and a flock of sheep? The fold is the enclosure that shepherds would locate their flocks in at night; many shepherds and many flocks would use the same fold and flocks would intermingle. Then the shepherds would call out their flocks and the word "church" comes from this philosophy of "a 'called out' gathering". 4. What is the sheep's relationship to the shepherd? The sheep need to obey the shepherd; it is the job of the shepherd to give an account of his sheep. It is the duty of the sheep to be submissive to the shepherd to increase the joy of the shepherd, as well as of the sheep. 5. What are some of the needs of sheep of which shepherd need to be aware? - Find lost ones 6. What would you say is the central teaching(s) and applications of this figure? One message is to pastors/teachers (shepherds) and how they are to relate to Christ and to their flocks and the other message is to the church membership (sheep) and how they are to relate to their shepherds. Shepherds are to lovingly care and guide their sheep, caring for the lost and/or sick ones and sheep are to obey the shepherd and not wander off from the flock. Flock Diagram:
