The Six Figures of the Church - Summary

1. Body

  • The head is prominent and pre-eminent
  • The body is inseparably united to the head for direction
  • The body is interdependently united to carry out the direction of the Head

2. Branches

  • The life is in the Vine
  • Pruning is essential for best productivity
  • Vine wood is only good for producing fruit

3. Flock

  • Sheep need shepherding
  • Jesus is the Chief Shepherd but has delegated authority of local flocks to Undershepherds
  • Undershepherds are expected to provide full and special care to the flock

4. Priesthood

  • Israel is not the Church
  • Priests are chosen, appointed representatives
  • Having access to God, priests must function appropriately

5. Building

  • Believers are the 'building materials', the living stones, of the Temple
  • God arranges the materials in His building
  • God not only lives in the individual 'stones', but also in the constructed building

6. Bride

  • The emphasis is on the great love of the Groom
  • Because of that love, the bride is changed and exalted
  • The consummation of the marriage is yet future
